Fontana Sant'Andrea (Saint Andrew's Fountain), Amalfi
The Saint Andrew’s Fountain, an ornate baroque monument dating to 1760, was created in honor of Amalfi’s patron saint. Crafted from stone, it has long stood as one of the town’s most recognizable symbols. In 2018, thanks to revenue collected from tourism, the fountain underwent careful restoration. This effort restored the brilliance of its marble and sharpened the fine sculptural details.
Its design is rich in allegory, with each figure embodying a natural element: a dove signifies air, a “Pulicano” fisherman represents the land, a mermaid embodies water, and the central figure of Saint Andrew himself reflects fire.
The fountain once stood at the foot of the cathedral’s grand stairway but was relocated in the late 19th century to improve access through the busy square. Beyond its decorative appeal, it originally had a very practical role, supplying fresh water to Amalfi’s residents before evolving into the beloved landmark seen today.
