Fort Worth Zoo, Fort Worth
The Fort Worth Zoo, established in 1909, began with a modest collection of animals and gradually expanded into one of the most comprehensive zoological institutions in the United States. Originally operated by the City of Fort Worth, the zoo has been under the management of the Fort Worth Zoological Association since 1991. Today, it houses approximately 7,000 animals representing 542 species and is recognized by major national and international zoo associations. Over the decades, the zoo has developed numerous specialized habitats and education programs while maintaining a focus on species conservation and public awareness.
Among its most developed sections are Elephant Springs, which offers a redesigned environment for Asian elephants, and the World of Primates, which includes indoor and outdoor habitats for gorillas, orangutans, and other species. The Predators of Asia and Africa exhibit, introduced in 2023, includes spaces for lions, cheetahs, leopards, and birds such as red-crowned cranes and flamingos. Longstanding exhibits like Raptor Canyon, the Australian Outback with the Great Barrier Reef aquarium, and Flamingo Bay display a broad range of avian and terrestrial species. The African Savanna area provides elevated viewing platforms for giraffes and features habitats for rhinos, hippos, and meerkats.
The Museum of Living Art, a 30,000-square-foot herpetarium, contains one of the largest reptile collections in the country. The Texas Wild! exhibit highlights native habitats and wildlife from across the state, from the Pineywoods to the Gulf Coast. The zoo also maintains active conservation programs locally and globally, including efforts to protect endangered species such as the Jamaican iguana, harpy eagle, and bonobo.
