Fourth Congregational Church, Hartford

Fourth Congregational Church, Hartford

The Fourth Congregational Church, now known as Liberty Christian Center International, is a historic landmark located at Albany Avenue and Vine Street in the Clay-Arsenal neighborhood of Hartford. Built between 1913 and 1914, the current structure reflects the Georgian Revival style and incorporates architectural elements-such as the steeple, doors, and grand Corinthian portico-from an earlier 1850 Greek Revival church designed by Sidney Mason Stone. The building was designed by the architectural firm Davis & Brooks.

Strategically positioned on a raised lot and set at an angle, the church commands attention with its monumental façade: a six-column Corinthian portico topped by a dentillated pediment and a multi-stage clock tower capped with an octagonal spire. Constructed of brick on a concrete foundation, the structure combines historical preservation with impressive architectural gravitas.

Originally established as The Free Church in 1832, the congregation later became known as the Fourth Congregational Church. In 1954, it merged with the Windsor Avenue Congregational Church, forming what was briefly called the Horace Bushnell Congregational Church, in honor of the noted theologian.

The building was recognized for its historical and architectural significance and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Today, it continues to serve the community as the home of Liberty Christian Center International.
