Foyles (bookstore), London

Established in 1903 by the Foyle brothers following their unsuccessful attempts at the Civil Service examinations, this bookstore, under family ownership, stands as a renowned literary institution. It occupies a 1930s Art Deco structure, formerly the residence of the prestigious Central Saint Martins art college, standing out as one of London's premier destinations for textbooks and holding the distinction of being the largest retailer of foreign language books in the United Kingdom. Its shelves span a staggering four miles (approximately six kilometers), boasting a collection of over 200,000 titles.

Within Foyles' diverse inventory, you can find everything from popular fiction to military history, sheet music, comprehensive medical volumes, graphic novels, and beautifully illustrated fine arts books. Furthermore, the store provides an on-site Ray's Jazz section, which is recognized as one of London's top music outlets, along with an exceptional classical music assortment and a chic jazz café. Foyles also plays host to regular readings and events and extends its presence through smaller branches located at Stratford's Westfield shopping center and Waterloo Station.
