Francis Winspear Centre for Music, Edmonton
Located in the heart of downtown Edmonton, the Francis Winspear Centre for Music is a leading performing arts venue and the proud home of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. Opened in 1997, the Centre is a testament to community support and philanthropic vision, bearing the name of Francis G. Winspear, whose $6 million donation-the largest private gift ever made to a Canadian performing arts facility-was instrumental in its creation. Substantial contributions from both the federal and Alberta provincial governments added $15 million each, bringing the vision to life.
The concert hall itself is designed in a modern interpretation of the traditional "shoebox" style, with parallel side walls and a tall, rectangular layout. It seats 1,668 people, expanding to 1,884 with choir loft seating. Acoustics are central to the venue’s excellence, with adjustable velour banners, curtains, and a movable canopy system that allows for fine-tuning the sound environment to suit different types of performances. These features, along with curved acoustic reflectors, also enhance communication between musicians on stage.
A major highlight of the Centre is the Davis Concert Organ, built by Orgues Létourneau Limitée of Quebec. Installed in 2002 and unveiled at a sold-out performance, this monumental pipe organ includes 96 stops, 122 ranks, and 6,551 pipes. It is named in honor of Stuart Davis, in memory of his wife, Winona, recognizing their generous support.
With world-class acoustics, architectural elegance, and a growing role in community engagement, the Francis Winspear Centre continues to be a cornerstone of Edmonton’s cultural life.
