Franciscan Church, Waterford

Franciscan Church, Waterford

The Franciscan Friary and Church is a 19th-century Roman Catholic landmark with deep historical roots. The Franciscans first arrived in the city around 1240, but the present friary was established much later, when its foundation stone was laid on February 14, 1844 and the building completed in the years that followed. The church itself predates the friary, built in 1833–1834, though its opening was delayed due to church disputes.

Over time, the church grew in scale and presence. Between 1905 and 1908, under the direction of Fr. Cornelius Francis Begley and with support from Bishop Richard Sheehan, nearby premises-once a Protestant national school-were purchased and removed to allow for expansion. This project added the elegant bell tower and gave the church its more commanding appearance. Further renovations began in 1928, with major structural improvements completed in the early 1930s.

Architecturally, the church is best known for its Romanesque revival style. Visitors will notice the semi-circular apse, the Ionic columns along the nave, and the marble details in the high altar and communion rail. A key moment in its history came on May 17, 1944, when Bishop Daniel Cohalan consecrated the church, formally recognizing its place in the diocese.

The Friary also reflects the long presence of the Franciscans in Waterford. For almost 800 years, the order shaped the city’s religious life through times of growth and change. In May 2019, the friars left the Lady Lane site, closing an important chapter, though services have continued with help from the Clonmel community to ensure Mass and Confession remain available.

Waterford is the oldest city in Ireland, whose stones still resonate with the echoes of its vibrant past. Historically the site of a Viking settlement, it emerged in 914 AD. The name “Waterford” derives from the Old Norse “Vedrarfjord,” meaning "ram-" or "windy fjord," which speaks to the city's strategic coastal location and tempestuous history.
