Frank E. Moss United States Courthouse, Salt Lake City

Frank E. Moss United States Courthouse, Salt Lake City

The Frank E. Moss United States Courthouse, a historic landmark in Salt Lake City, originally opened as the United States Post Office and Courthouse in 1905. Located in the Exchange Place Historic District, it is the oldest structure among eight buildings representing Utah's early 20th-century prosperity. Designed in the Classical Revival style by James Knox Taylor of the U.S. Treasury Department, the building initially featured a U-shaped design. Later, additions in 1912 and 1932 created a figure-eight layout around two light courts.

Constructed with Kyune sandstone, the courthouse's exterior faced significant wear over the years, prompting a re-facing in Utah granite during the 1932 expansion. The eastern facade showcases a colonnade of fifteen fluted Doric columns, intricate bronze entry doors, and decorative metal screens, while the simpler west-facing rear was built in yellow brick to remain inconspicuous. Inside, the courthouse boasts marble, tile, and terrazzo flooring, as well as original oak and plaster details preserved in its second-floor courtrooms.

Until 2014, this building served as the primary facility for the United States District Court for the District of Utah. To accommodate the growing needs of the court, a modern courthouse was constructed adjacent to it. Today, the Frank E. Moss Courthouse continues to house the United States Bankruptcy Court for Utah and other federal agencies, a testament to Utah's historical and architectural legacy.
