Galleria Sabauda (Savoy Gallery), Turin

Nestled in the heart of Turin’s Royal Palace complex, the Galleria Sabauda (Savoy Gallery) presents an extraordinary journey through centuries of European art. Established in 1832 by King Charles Albert of Sardinia-on his birthday, October 2-this “Royal Gallery” originally featured 365 paintings drawn from the House of Savoy’s various residences, including the Royal Palace, the Savoy-Carignano galleries, and the Durazzo collection from Genoa.

Over the years, the gallery relocated-first to Palazzo dell’Accademia delle Scienze in 1865, where it remained until 2012-and finally found its modern home in 2014 in the “Manica Nuova” (New Wing) of the Royal Palace, a space redesigned with a contemporary museographic vision by Edith Gabrielli and Studio Albini Associati. Today it's part of the majestic Musei Reali of Turin.

Inside, the Galleria Sabauda boasts over 700 artworks spanning the 13th to the 20th centuries, with outstanding examples from both Italian and Northern European traditions. Visitors can marvel at Italian masters such as Duccio di Buoninsegna (Gualino Madonna), Fra Angelico, Filippino Lippi, Andrea Mantegna, Bronzino, Orazio Gentileschi, Tiepolo, Guercino, and Veronese. It also houses a remarkable collection of Flemish and Dutch paintings, including works by Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Hans Memling, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Rubens, Brueghel, and Memling again.

For art lovers and casual visitors alike, the gallery blends historical richness with modern presentation. Its carefully curated, chronological layout allows one to traverse artistic movements in an immersive fashion, from medieval religious imagery to Baroque drama. Situated in the sophisticated setting of Turin’s Royal Palace, visiting the Galleria Sabauda is not just a chance to admire superb masterpieces-it’s an invitation to connect with Piedmont’s artistic legacy and the enduring cultural heritage of the Savoy dynasty.
