Gallery 5, Richmond
Gallery5, located on West Marshall Street in Richmond, is a multifaceted arts center that integrates a museum, gallery, venue, and community space in the historic Jackson Ward neighborhood. Since its inception in 2005, it has been situated in the building of Steamer Company Number 5, Virginia’s oldest standing firehouse, which has also served historically as a police station and a museum for police and firefighting history. This landmark was preserved from potential demolition through dedicated volunteer efforts and opened as Gallery5 to protect and celebrate its heritage.
As an integral part of Richmond's vibrant cultural scene, Gallery5 plays a crucial role in the monthly First Friday Art Walk, attracting artists and art enthusiasts to Downtown Richmond. The center is committed to using art as a vehicle for social and economic change, fostering diverse and inclusive collaborations that engage the community. Gallery5's art exhibitions are dynamic, featuring themed solo or group shows, and highlighting both renowned international artists and emerging local talents.
Beyond visual arts, Gallery5 hosts a variety of performances including live music across genres, comedy, burlesque, spoken word, film, contemporary dance, and theater, featuring both local and nationally recognized artists. It aims to inspire and facilitate cultural creativity, serving as a catalyst for new initiatives and a launching pad for emerging artists and area non-profits.
Since opening its doors, Gallery5 has significantly contributed to the cultural and economic revitalization of Jackson Ward, encouraging a thriving arts community and supporting a wide array of public art collectives, educational workshops, and grassroots collaborations.
