Golden Chapel (Capela Dourada), Recife

Golden Chapel (Capela Dourada), Recife

The Golden Chapel is part of a historic Franciscan complex in Recife. It is a notable example of colonial-era architecture. Constructed between the 17th and 18th centuries, it is part of the Convent and Church of Santo Antônio, which also includes a Museum of Sacred Art.

The chapel is particularly striking due to its extensive use of gold in the carved wooden walls, creating a bright yellow glow throughout. The interior is further enriched with sacred images and paintings, making the chapel an impressive representation of the wealth and craftsmanship from that period. The sacristy is furnished with carved rosewood pieces from 1762, alongside imported marble items.
