Gradina Zoologica (Zoological Garden), Sibiu
In 1929, Romania's first zoo was established in the Dumbrava forest by Sibiu Electric Plant, led by engineer Szekely. He was inspired to create the zoo after discovering foxes while working on repairs at the Sadu dam. After its opening, the zoo received various animal donations, including a wildcat, a she-wolf from the King via Obert von Spiess, a wolf from the "Falcons" Association, an eagle, a Carpathian deer from hunters in Talmacel, wild boars, and more. The first bear arrived in 1930.
Notably, there is a 600-year-old oak tree at the entrance. The Sibiu Zoo spans over 20 hectares. In 2006, an 800 m² jaguar habitat was constructed, and the lake dam was restored. In 2007, Lake No. 2 was remodeled, with an island of 350 m² added in 2008. That same year, the enclosures for bears and jaguars were expanded, followed by improvements for white wolves, lions, tigers, wild boars, and herbivores in subsequent years.
Currently, the zoo houses around 300 animals and birds from 70 species, including monkeys, bears, white and Carpathian wolves, foxes, tigers, lions, jaguars, pumas, wild boars, llamas, Carpathian deer, fallow deer, white buffalo, ponies, a reticulated python, a crocodile, pheasants, parrots, peacocks, and pigeons.
