Hall-Benedict Drug Company Building, New Haven

Hall-Benedict Drug Company Building, New Haven

The Hall-Benedict Drug Company Building, located in the East Rock neighborhood of New Haven, is a well-preserved example of early 20th-century mixed-use architecture. Constructed in 1909 for Alonzo B. Hall and his business partner Edward M. Benedict, the building originally housed a pharmacy on the ground floor with residential space above-an arrangement typical of the time but now rarely seen in such intact condition.

Designed by local architect Frank Elwood Brown, known for his work on modest residential and commercial buildings in the area, the structure reflects thoughtful design and durable materials. The 2½-story brick building features load-bearing walls and a distinctive steep mansard front roof, adorned with modillion blocks and punctuated by three dormers-two gabled and one with a shed roof. The asymmetrical front façade, facing Orange Street, includes a corner storefront with a recessed entrance and a central round-arched window bay. Above, the windows are sash-style, each topped with fixed diamond-light transoms, adding to the period charm.

A rear ell was added in 1929, but aside from this extension, the building has seen few significant changes to its original design. Unfortunately, in 2020, its historic storefront windows were removed and replaced with modern plate-glass windows-an alteration at odds with the building's original character, despite preservationists’ efforts.

The Hall-Benedict Drug Company Building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1986) and also contributes to the Whitney Avenue Historic District. Positioned on the corner of Orange and Linden Streets, northeast of downtown New Haven, it remains a rare and important example of early neighborhood commercial architecture in the city.
