Hasle Kirke (Hasle Church), Aarhus
Hasle Church (Hasle Kirke) is a historic church situated in Hasle Parish in Aarhus. The church lies approximately 3 kilometers west of the Aarhus city center and just north of Åbyhøj. It serves as a parish church within the Church of Denmark and caters to a parish population of 7,515.
The church's construction dates back to the mid-12th century and features a Romanesque architectural style. Its robust structure is built from raw boulders, with ashlar used to reinforce the corners, windows, and doorways. Notably, the north wall retains two original Romanesque windows, although other openings, including the north door and an east wall window, have been subsequently blocked.
In 1871–72, a significant addition was made with the construction of a new church porch, replacing an older half-timbered structure. This renovation also allowed for the expansion of the porch in 2005, making the original granite reliefs visible to visitors. These reliefs are among the church's most distinguished features. The tympanum above the porch entrance vividly depicts Jesus Christ on the cross, surrounded by motifs of lions battling dragons, various people, and a haloed head at the entryway's left base.
Another striking piece of stonework is found on the granite ashlar located in the south corner of the tower, which is believed to originate from the sealed north door. This relief portrays a man with his right hand behind a woman's skirt, while the woman reaches for a ring in the mouth of a horse-headed figure. Both figures are shown with their left hands raised to their ears as if listening intently.
Hasle Church not only serves as a place of worship but also stands as a testament to the intricate artistry and craftsmanship of its era, making it a significant cultural and historical landmark in Aarhus.
