Hatuniye Camisi (Hatuniye Mosque), Izmir
Located in the Konak district of Izmir, Hatuniye Mosque is a notable historical structure built in the second half of the 17th century. Commissioned by Hacı Hüseyin Ağa-also the founder of the nearby Başdurak Mosque-Hatuniye Mosque was constructed in honor of his wife, Tayyibe Hatun. Originally part of the "Tilkilik" region, the area is now known as the Kurtuluş Neighborhood, a former hub of the Jewish community that later took its name from the mosque itself.
The mosque’s architectural plan is characterized by a large central dome flanked by two smaller domes, creating a balanced aesthetic. Its dome interiors are adorned with turquoise, blue, and green motifs, reflecting the artistic preferences of the period. The square-planned mosque also includes a final congregation area and a mihrab shaped like a round niche. The wooden pulpit is decorated with intricate geometric patterns, which echo the design style of both the Kemeraltı and Başdurak Mosques, built during the same era.
Hatuniye Mosque has undergone numerous renovations since the 1730s, with major restorations in the 18th, 19th centuries, and in 1965, which altered its original look. The mosque's minaret, showcasing 18th-century elements, is one of its prominent features. The former courtyard, once lined with madrasa cells, has mostly been turned into a park by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, leaving only a small corner intact. Nearby, the Dönertaş Fountain adds a historical touch to the area.
Hatuniye Mosque’s interior design reflects the influence of the Westernization period in Ottoman architecture. The plaster decorations, Baroque-style mihrab, and gold-gilded wooden pulpit stand as examples of this transition. Despite the modifications and loss of its original courtyard, the mosque remains an important landmark in Izmir’s historical landscape. During the month of Ramadan, the mosque hosts iftar gatherings, reinforcing its role as a center of community life.
Today, the Hatuniye Mosque continues to serve both as a place of worship and as a reminder of the city's rich cultural and architectural heritage.
