Hazlehead Park, Aberdeen

Hazlehead Park, Aberdeen

Hazlehead Park, located in the Hazlehead area of Aberdeen, is a vast public park spanning 180 hectares. Opened to the public in 1920, the park was originally part of the Hazlehead House estate, home to shipbuilder William Rose. Today, it is known for its dense woodlands and numerous walking trails, making it a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts.

The park is equipped with a variety of recreational facilities, including football pitches, two 18-hole golf courses, a 9-hole course, a pitch and putt course, and even a foot-golf area. Notably, the "Number 1" golf course was designed by the renowned Alistair MacKenzie, who also designed the Augusta National course in the U.S. Hazlehead Park also hosts a horse-riding school and is home to Scotland's oldest maze, which was planted in 1935.

In addition to its recreational offerings, the park features an impressive collection of sculptures, including a memorial for the victims of the Piper Alpha disaster. It also contains heritage items rescued from various parts of Aberdeen, adding a historical element to the park's attractions. The park received a Green Flag award for sustainability and maintenance in 2022, underscoring its environmental stewardship.

The park has a rich history of public events, including hosting the Free 2007 Northsound Radio concert, which claimed to be Scotland's largest free outdoor event. It also serves as the site for a popular Parkrun, attracting runners from the local community.

Historically, the park was also the terminus of one of Aberdeen Corporation Tramways' routes, which ceased operations in 1958. Although the bus service that replaced the tram route was later discontinued, Hazlehead Park remains a beloved and accessible destination for Aberdeen residents and visitors alike.
