Historical Museum, Krakow

The Main Square of Krakow boasts several significant attractions, among them the Historical Museum, housed within the splendid Krzysztofory Palace. This museum stands as a testament to Krakow's distinction as Poland's cultural capital, showcasing a wealth of artifacts.

The Krzysztofory Palace, an exquisite Baroque edifice, serves as the museum's host and is an integral part of Krakow's cherished heritage. Its origins trace back to the mid-17th century when it was owned by Crown Court Marshal Adam Kazanowski. Over time, the palace underwent a series of renovations and even accommodated the renowned restaurant, Pod Palmą, on its ground floor. The interiors of the palace are adorned with magnificent stucco work crafted by the skilled Italian architect, Baldassare Fontana.

Within the Historical Museum, an array of captivating exhibits awaits. These include city maps spanning the 16th to 20th centuries, captivating paintings, intricate prints, evocative photographs, artifacts from various guilds, and masterpieces crafted by Krakow's talented artists and artisans. Notably, the museum also houses portraits of nobility spanning from the 16th to the 20th century, an assortment of weapons spanning from the 14th to the 20th century, and a diverse collection of clocks dating from the 16th to the 20th century.

Beyond these historically significant artifacts, the museum proudly features the renowned Polish nativity scenes known as 'Szopki.' These charming paper mache cribs garner considerable attention within the museum and offer a delightful sight for visitors to behold.
