Holy Rosary Church, Tacoma

Holy Rosary Church, Tacoma

Holy Rosary Church is a historic Catholic landmark known for its tall Gothic Revival profile. The parish was founded in 1891 by German Catholic immigrants who wanted sermons in their own language. After their first wooden church was declared unsafe in 1912, the congregation worshipped in the school auditorium for nearly nine years while raising funds. The present brick church was dedicated on November 13, 1921.

Designed by C. Frank Mahon of Lundberg & Mahon, the church follows the shape of a Latin cross, with pointed arches, brick walls, stone details, stained glass, and a 210-foot tower. It was deliberately placed at the end of a major avenue, making it both a parish church and a civic focal point. It also had an early electric steam-heating system beneath the pews, but the costly, unreliable system was later replaced with hot-air heating.

Holy Rosary’s later history includes both damage and preservation. During the 1965 Puget Sound earthquake, the tower’s original plate-glass cross fell and was replaced the next year. The church became an official city landmark in 1975. More recently, water damage and falling plaster forced its closure, prompting costly repair plans and a broad preservation campaign backed by parishioners, historians, and local supporters.
