Holy Trinity Church, Juneau

Holy Trinity Church is one of Juneau’s historic Episcopal congregations, with a history dating back to the late 19th century. The current church building was completed in 2009 after the original structure was destroyed by fire on March 12, 2006. Following the loss of the historic building, the congregation rebuilt on the same site and continued its role as an active center of Episcopal worship in Juneau.

The original Holy Trinity Church was constructed in 1896 and designed by architect George E. James in the Carpenter Gothic style. Built by Foss and Olsen, the wood-frame structure featured steeply pitched roofs, pointed lancet windows, and other Gothic Revival details typical of the period. Before 1914, the building was raised to add a basement, and a parish hall was later added in 1956, although the addition followed a different architectural style. From 1918 to 1944, Holy Trinity served as the pro-cathedral of the Episcopal Diocese of Alaska, reflecting its important role within the region’s Episcopal community.

The historic church building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 19, 1978, recognizing its architectural and religious significance. Although the original structure was lost, the rebuilt church continues the congregation’s long presence in Juneau and preserves the connection to the parish’s history.
