House of Art, Stuttgart

The House of Art, located at the eastern corner of Schlossplatz in Stuttgart, is a prominent cultural landmark and the home of the Württemberg Society of Art. This gallery, rich in history and artistic heritage, showcases an impressive collection of art from the 19th century to the present. The building, known as the Art Building (Kunstgebäude), was constructed between 1910 and 1913 by architect Theodor Fischer and is crowned with a golden stag, a distinctive feature that survived despite severe damage during World War II. The restoration of the building took place between 1956 and 1961, led by architects Paul Bonatz and Günter Wilhelm.

The House of Art hosts the Stuttgart City Gallery, the Württemberg Society of Art, and the Stuttgart Union of Artists Gallery. It is known for its diverse exhibitions, including works by notable artists such as Fritz Winter, Adolf Hölzel, Otto Dix, Joseph Kosuth, and Dieter Roth. The Württemberg Art Association, one of Germany's oldest art associations, was founded in 1827 and has around 3,000 members. It focuses on contemporary art, presenting various forms, including painting, graphics, photography, video art, installations, performance art, and architecture.

Under the leadership of curator and publicist Martin Fritz, who has been the chairman since 2018, the Württemberg Art Association continues to be an active and influential institution. It organizes an array of activities, including thematic exhibitions, lectures, conferences, and the awarding of scholarships, thereby serving as a vibrant center for the arts in Stuttgart.
