Hranilniska ulica (Savings Bank Street), Ljubljana

The Bežigrad suburb originated in a vacant area between the town in the north and villages in the south. Its central settlement core is Hranilniška, one of Ljubljana's oldest streets, known for its well-preserved architectural character and heritage buildings.

In 1887, the Society for the Construction of Workers' Housing was established in Ljubljana, initiated by the Carniolan Savings Banks, which began constructing rental housing to generate income. Hranilniška Street marked the first significant rental construction of this kind in Ljubljana, with twelve residential houses emerging in 1889. Originally intended for the German population, these apartments, characterized by their small size and associated gardens, were later inhabited by workers.

As private houses became numerous, Bežigrad gained a reputation as a true "middle-class suburb", although only the upper middle class resided in these homes, due to higher education and better job positions. To address housing shortages for lower-income groups, the municipality of Ljubljana constructed several apartment buildings and colonies during this period.
