Iglesia de la Encarnacion (Church of the Incarnation), Asuncion

Perched on one of the hills of Paraguay’s capital, the Church of the Incarnation (Iglesia de la Encarnación) is a striking Catholic monument dedicated to Our Lady of the Incarnation. This church stands out not only for its elevated location in Asunción but also for its eclectic architectural language, which departs notably from the stylistic norms of local Paraguayan ecclesiastical design.

Construction began in 1893 under the direction of Italian architect Juan Colombo. Although unfinished, the building’s Roman-Corinthian features, reminiscent of European cathedrals, give it an imposing and stately presence. Its structure incorporates external stylistic influences, evident in the façade, tower, bell tower, and side galleries-none of which follow a single, classifiable architectural style.

The floor plan follows the traditional basilica layout with a Latin cross shape. It features a central nave flanked by four side aisles-two on each side-separated by conical columns with Tuscan bases and bell-shaped capitals. The design is historically layered: the body and apse reflect early Christian basilica forms; the transept recalls innovations from the Constantinian period; while the deep, interconnected chapels point to Gothic influences.

At the intersection of the nave and transept, four arches supported by columns uphold a drum set on pendentives. This drum, which forms the base of the dome and its crowning cupola, is punctuated by six Art Deco windows, a modern touch in an otherwise historical structure. Twelve chapels with niches serve as ambulatories leading to the apse.

Natural light plays a key role in the church’s interior ambiance. Of its 66 windows, 41 provide illumination across three levels, complemented by seven large doors-three at the front, two at the transept, and two more on the side walls-ensuring access from multiple directions, including through the sacristy on the south side.

Despite several changes over time, the church has maintained its spatial integrity and functionality. In recognition of its cultural and architectural significance, the Church of the Incarnation was declared a National Historic Monument by the Republic of Paraguay in 1992.
