Iglesia de la Madre de Dios del Rosario (Church of Mother of God of the Rosary), Ibiza
The Church of Mother of God of the Rosary (Iglesia de la Madre de Dios del Rosario) is one of the most recently constructed religious buildings in Ibiza Town, standing out with its modern take on traditional Ibizan church architecture. Designed by architect Josep Antoni Zornoza Tur, it was built between 1991 and 1992, embodying the signature whitewashed aesthetic that characterizes many of the island’s older churches.
Originally, the church was intended to be dedicated solely to Sant Ciriac, the island’s patron saint. However, it was ultimately decided that it would also honor the Mother of God of the Rosary, whose feast day on August 5th falls just three days before Sant Ciriac’s celebration. This dual dedication gives the church a special place in the religious life of Ibiza, with lively festivities held around the beginning of August each year.
The church is located at the end of Ignacio Wallis Avenue, a major thoroughfare in Ibiza Town, right next to the city’s main post office. Its single-nave structure, unadorned exterior, and minimalistic design reflect the traditional Ibizan ecclesiastical style, making it a serene and contemplative space.
Inside, the church houses a significant statue of Sant Ciriac that had been kept in storage by the diocese before the church's completion. While there are no specific visiting hours, visitors are welcome to attend mass, which is held Monday through Friday at 7 pm, Saturdays at 8 pm, and Sundays at 11 am and 8 pm. This is not only a chance to see the church but also an opportunity to experience local culture and community life.
The Church of Mother of God of the Rosary may be relatively new, but it has quickly become a beloved site of worship and celebration in Ibiza Town, blending contemporary architecture with timeless traditions.
