Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Fátima (Church of Our Lady of Fatima), Malaga

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Fátima (Church of Our Lady of Fatima), Malaga

The Church of Our Lady of Fatima is a notable Catholic Christian temple situated in the La Trinidad neighborhood of Malaga. Positioned on the right bank of the Guadalmedina River, the church stands as a significant landmark combining modern and neo-Gothic architectural styles. It was designed by architect Fernando Morilla Cabello and completed in 1961, five years after its canonical establishment by Bishop Don Angel Herrera Oria, a respected figure in Malaga’s ecclesiastical history.

The church showcases a mix of avant-garde modernity and traditional neo-Gothic elements. Its high gabled façade is compartmentalized to house the bells, while the interior features a striking sequence of pointed diaphragm arches supporting the roof. The layout includes three longitudinal naves: a large central nave for liturgies and smaller side naves used as ambulatories. These elements create a harmonious yet innovative design, making the church an architectural treasure of the mid-20th century.

Inside, visitors are drawn to the Chapel of the Virgin of Fatima, which is uniquely designed. The Virgin is depicted standing on a dry tree trunk, set against a blue backdrop resembling the sky-a creative and original representation. This chapel is a focal point for the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Fatima, which has its headquarters in the church.

The church's establishment and later blessing in 1961 reflect the vision of Bishop Angel Herrera Oria, emphasizing its importance as a spiritual and cultural landmark. The church also occupies a visually prominent location opposite the dry riverbed of the Guadalmedina, a site that remains central to local urban debates.

Although the church is often closed outside of worship hours, its historical and architectural significance makes it a must-visit destination in Malaga, offering a glimpse into the fusion of tradition and modernity.
