Iglesia San Jose (Saint Joseph Church), Asuncion

The Saint Joseph Church (Iglesia San José) in Asunción stands as one of the capital’s most prominent Roman Catholic landmarks. Known for its Romanesque architectural style and spacious interior, it is among the largest churches in the city. Dedicated to Saint Joseph, the adoptive father of Jesus and husband of the Virgin Mary, the church is closely tied to the legacy of the San José School, a significant educational institution founded in 1904.

Although the San José parish has existed for over 80 years, the current church was born from the school's fiftieth-anniversary celebrations. On March 21, 1954, the cornerstone of the present temple was blessed. The project was spearheaded by Father Francisco Palau-a missionary with experience in China and a deep passion for construction-who unfortunately lost his life during the building process, murdered on-site by one of the masons on December 3, 1955.

The construction was technically led by engineer Toribio Gruin, a former student of the school. After a decade of work, the church was officially inaugurated and blessed on June 28, 1964, in a solemn ceremony led by Archbishop Aníbal Mena Porta. The event gathered not only clergy and faithful, but also key figures from civil, military, and diplomatic spheres.

Since its inauguration, Saint Joseph Church has remained a spiritual and cultural hub. Each year, the parish celebrates the church's foundation with a formal ceremony and an art festival, uniting tradition and creativity.
