Iglesia Santisima Trinidad (Holy Trinity Church), Asuncion
Perched on the highest hill of the Trinidad neighborhood in Asunción, the Holy Trinity Church stands as one of Paraguay’s most historically and artistically significant landmarks. Commissioned in 1854 by Don Carlos Antonio López-Paraguay's first Constitutional President-and designed by the Italian architect Alejandro Ravizza, the church was initially built as a private chapel for the López family. It was inaugurated on April 13, 1856.
Distinguished by its ornate façade and richly painted ceiling, the church blends spiritual devotion with national pride. The central nave features the Paraguayan flag and national coat of arms-symbols integrated at President López’s request. Inside, the church houses exquisite Franciscan altarpieces transported from Yaguarón and life-sized religious images that are especially meaningful during Holy Week.
Following the death of Don Carlos López, his remains were temporarily housed here before being moved to the National Pantheon of Heroes in the 20th century. The church was eventually declared a Tangible Cultural Heritage Site of Asunción and, with over 3,500 public votes, earned its place among the city’s seven cultural treasures.
Modern additions include a dramatic exterior lighting system (installed in 2011) and interior cold lights (added in 2016), enhancing the church’s atmosphere for evening visitors. Today, the Church of the Holy Trinity remains not only a monument to Paraguay’s Christian heritage but also a cherished symbol of its national identity.
