İki Çeşmelik Camisi (İki Çeşmelik Mosque), Izmir
The İki Çeşmelik Mosque, located in the Tuzcu District of Konak in Izmir, is a historical Ottoman mosque built in 1893. The mosque, also known as Kurd Mehmed Pasha Mosque, is situated at the intersection of Eşrefpaşa Street and 773 Street, making it a significant landmark in the area. The name "İki Çeşmelik" refers to its location in the district of the same name, meaning "Two Fountains."
Constructed using a masonry system with cut stone, the mosque stands on a high pedestal, with shops added to its lower section. This unique design makes it accessible only via stairs, further elevating the main prayer area above street level. The mosque’s main façade, facing Eşrefpaşa Street, houses these shops, while the ground floor along 772 Street hosts the Konak Mufti Office.
The interior of the mosque is covered by an internal dome supported by two piers and four columns. A hipped wooden roof, sloping to both sides, envelops the structure, and ten additional wooden columns help reinforce the dome. This roofing design, combined with the outer tile covering, makes the dome almost imperceptible from the outside. The prayer area, nearly square-shaped, spans an area of 176.5 square meters, offering a spacious environment for worship.
The mosque's mihrab is a beautifully crafted round niche, and its pulpit is made of wood, reflecting traditional Ottoman architectural elements. The mosque also features a minaret at its northwest corner, built from white cut stone. The minaret, with a single balcony, rises on a distinctive five-cornered base and has a round body, adding to the mosque’s architectural grandeur.
Today, the İki Çeşmelik Mosque stands as a testament to Ottoman architecture and urban design in Izmir, combining religious, commercial, and administrative functions within its premises. Its strategic location on the route from Bayramyeri to Eşrefpaşa Street and its intricate stonework make it a distinguished monument in the historical fabric of the city.
