Ile des Cygnes (Isle of Swans), Annecy

Isle of Swans, known as Ile des Cygnes, is a charming artificial islet situated in the northern part of Lake Annecy, within the commune of Annecy in Haute-Savoie. Created in 1854 using material dredged from the Thiou River, the island was later expanded in 1859 and fortified with riprap in 1883 to withstand the lake's waves. It remains the only island in Lake Annecy, offering a unique refuge for local birdlife.

The island is densely covered with trees and shrubs, creating an ideal habitat for a variety of birds. Swans, which gave the island its name, were introduced by the city of Geneva in 1857 and the House of Savoy in 1858. Over time, the swans and other birds such as cormorants, warblers, seagulls, gulls, kingfishers, and herons began nesting there, solidifying the island’s role as a sanctuary for wildlife.

Isle of Swans cannot be visited directly, as docking is prohibited, but it can be admired from the shores of the Gardens of Europe, a nearby wooded park perfect for strolls. Visitors can also view the island up close by renting a pedal boat or motorboat, or by enjoying a swim in the lake. In the evening, the islet is beautifully illuminated by fountains located in the lake, creating a serene and picturesque scene.

During the summer, the Isle of Swans plays a role in the Annecy Landscapes Festival, serving as a natural backdrop for contemporary art installations. Its dense vegetation and tranquil setting make it a beloved spot for both locals and visitors seeking a peaceful connection to nature. Whether from the Pâquier lawn or the benches near the Berthollet statue, Isle of Swans is a delightful feature of Lake Annecy’s vibrant ecosystem and cultural landscape.
