Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Boise

Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Boise

Emmanuel Lutheran Church, also known by its former name, Augustana Chapel, was designed by Charles F. Hummel I and constructed in 1908. The building was dedicated on September 22, 1915. Owing to its genuine Gothic style, carefully preserved in every detail, the church was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in June 1976. It was also included, as a contributing property, in the Fort Street Historic District in November 1982.

The actual place of worship was organized on January 22, 1906, as the Swedish Lutheran Church of the Augustana Synod. Because of its Scandinavian origin, the church services were first held in Swedish, and it was only in October 1918 that they decided to switch to the English language, in an effort to appeal to Lutherans of other ethnic backgrounds.

In 1919 the temple changed its name to Boise Evangelical Lutheran Church, and in the 1950s was renamed again as Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. Other than the name, a century since, the establishment has not changed a bit and continues to spread the Gospel to the Lutheran Community of Boise as part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
