Indianapolis Zoo, Indianapolis

The Indianapolis Zoo, spanning 93 acres in White River State Park near downtown Indianapolis, is a celebrated non-profit institution encompassing a zoo, public aquarium, and botanical garden. Established by the Indianapolis Zoological Society in 1944, the zoo opened its doors in 1964 at George Washington Park. In 1988, it relocated to its current site, becoming one of the largest privately funded zoos in the United States.

The Indianapolis Zoo is the first U.S. institution with triple accreditation as a zoo, aquarium, and botanical garden. Accredited by AZA and AAM and a WAZA member, it leads in conservation and research, hosting the prestigious Indianapolis Prize and the Global Center for Species Survival with IUCN.

Home to over 1,400 animals representing 235 species, the Indianapolis Zoo also boasts the White River Gardens, with more than 50,000 plants across nearly 3,000 species. The zoo offers a range of seasonal amusement rides and interactive exhibits, such as the Shark/Ray Touch Pool, Kangaroo Crossing, and "Race A Cheetah." Notable zookeeper-led presentations include the Magnificent Macaws, Tembo Camp's African elephants, and dolphin showcases. Guests can enjoy animal feedings, including giraffes and lorikeets, and rides like the Kōmbo Family Coaster and the Skyline gondola lift.

From its early days featuring a modest collection of animals at Washington Park to its evolution into a globally recognized institution, the Indianapolis Zoo has continually expanded its offerings and impact. It remains one of Indianapolis's most popular and influential attractions, combining education, entertainment, and conservation in an engaging experience for all visitors.
