Jardin Alexandre I (Alexandre I Garden), Toulon
Alexandre I Garden is a lush green space rich in botanical history and a haven for relaxation in the heart of the city. Among its most remarkable trees is a towering Louisiana cypress, planted in 1797, now reaching 33 meters in height. The garden is also home to majestic plane trees, hackberry trees, horse chestnuts, oaks, and boxwoods, alongside more exotic species like Japanese privet, Pittosporums, and the striking Ginkgo biloba, which turns golden in autumn.
The garden also preserves historical and artistic elements, such as the gate of the Church of Notre Dame de Courtine, meticulously reassembled stone by stone in 1876, a statue of the sculptor Pierre Puget, created by Injalbert in 1891 and a bust of the poet Jean Aicard. The presence of a bandstand and a small ornamental pond with fish, along with a central canal with flowing water, adds to the park's charm.
Visitors can also admire the Monument to the Dead of the War of 1914-1918, facing the Palais de Justice. Created by sculptor Honoré Sausse, the monument was built between August 1924 and June 1925 and inaugurated on June 28, 1925. Its unique design, resembling a three-tiered pyramid, is preceded by two flights of stairs, adding to its solemn grandeur.
At its center, seven soldiers and sailors are aligned on a rectangular block, symbolizing the shared sacrifice of land and sea forces. Above them, a veiled woman stands with outstretched arms over cascading laurel wreaths, holding a shield that represents France mourning its fallen heroes.
