Jardin Public de Bayeux (Public Garden of Bayeux), Bayeux

The Bayeux Public Garden is a public garden located on rue de Port-en-Bessin, in the northwest of the city. A classified natural site, the garden was also included in the inventory of historic monuments in 2008. The most remarkable tree in the public garden is the weeping beech planted in the 19th century , classified as a natural monument since 1932 and labeled “ remarkable tree of France ” in 2001 . Of indeterminate species, it could be the result of a grafting between a common beech and a false Verzy . The branches of this tree cannot support their own weight, so a metal frame covering an area of more than 1,250 square meters prevents them from breaking. Since 2001, the collapsing metal frame (it dated from 1938) has been replaced by an original structure, the work of a local arborist who died in 2013. The branches no longer rest on metal beams, but are suspended by straps from a metal net held by four poles, which makes them free to move. The public garden is home to 400 trees including Sophora japonica , Giant Sequoia , Koelreuteria paniculata . Many trees were planted when the garden was created. Others have been replaced identically. A bronze bust of Charlemagne Jean-Delamare was erected in 1880 in the garden. It is the work of the sculptor Pierre Hottin (1821-1893). It was melted down under the Vichy regime , as part of the mobilization of non-ferrous metals . A replacement stone bust is installed.

The Bayeux botanical garden is one of the most beautiful 19th century landscaped parks in Normandy. A discovery tour invites you to discover the riches of this public garden created by the Bühler brothers and now classified as a historic monument. Among the 400 trees that the garden houses, the most spectacular element is a "weeping beech" classified as a natural monument since 1932 and labeled "Remarkable Tree of France".
