J.C Nichols Fountain, Kansas City

J.C Nichols Fountain, Kansas City

The J.C. Nichols Fountain horses are the representation of the 4 world's biggest rivers. The horse that fights the alligator represents the Mississippi. The horse fighting the bear is Volga's symbol, and the remaining two horses incorporate the Rhine and the Seine. The fountain is the work of French sculptor Henri Greber. The statue, created in 1910, stands 10 feet high and each of the horse-statues weights 1-1/2 tons. This set was brought from Paris in the 1950s and carefully restored. It remains unclear the message the sculptor tried to relay. However, Kansas City's Nelson Gallery of Art suggested that the figures were an allegory for the running waters.
