Kanzlerbungalow (Chancellor’s Bungalow), Bonn

The Chancellor’s Bungalow is a hallmark of post-war modernism designed by noted German architect Sep Ruf between 1963 and 1966 for Chancellor Ludwig Erhard. The structure features elegant glass walls, flat roofs, and a steel-frame construction. Its layout-two offset squares, each with its own atrium-mirrors a functional division between public reception areas and private living quarters.

The bungalow’s transparent design symbolized the Federal Republic of Germany's democratic values: inviting, open, and in clear contrast to monumental state edifices. With glass facades, spacious interiors, and flexible room dividers, it served as a private residence and an official venue for state receptions. Sep Ruf’s approach drew inspiration from Bauhaus principles and international models, including the work of Mies van der Rohe and the modernist homes of the California Case Study program.

Between 1964 and 1999, the bungalow hosted successive Chancellors-most notably Ludwig and Erhard, Helmut Schmidt, and Helmut Kohl-each bringing their personal touch and occasionally adapting the interior. Since the German government’s move to Berlin in 1999, the site has been preserved as a monument. Today it stands as part of the "Path of Democracy" and is under heritage protection, also having been reproduced at the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale.
