Kappele (Little Chapel), Wurzburg
Little Chapel, officially the Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of Mary, sits on Nikolausberg. Designed by Balthasar Neumann, it was built between 1748 and 1750, featuring twin octagonal towers inspired by the vaulted form of the Stift Haug church. The church's roots trace back to a simple wooden chapel from 1640, built around a shrine with a Vesperbild. Expanded over time, the new church was completed between 1778 and 1781 and consecrated in 1824.
Little Chapel narrowly avoided destruction in World War II. During the 1945 bombing of Würzburg, it suffered minor damage from incendiary bombs, and a defiant soldier later refused to destroy it with anti-aircraft guns. In 1945, a priest returned the Virgin Mary image, previously buried for safety, to the chapel. The church's frescoes, painted by Matthäus Günther in 1781, depict the Descent from the Cross and an apocalyptic Mary. The altar still holds the original 1640 Pietà. The organ, installed in 1991, resembles the original 1750 design by Johann Christian Köhler.
