Kepier Hospital, Durham

Kepier Hospital, Durham

Kepier Hospital, properly the Hospital of Saint Giles of Kepier, offers a rare glimpse of medieval welfare in Durham. Founded in 1112 by Bishop Ranulf Flambard as an almshouse “for the keeping of the poor,” its first chapel now survives as Saint Giles Church in Gilesgate. After the turbulent 1140s, when the original hospital was destroyed amid a struggle for the bishopric, Bishop Hugh le Puiset re-established the community here around 1180 with thirteen brethren caring for local men in need as well as travellers and pilgrims. Endowments of land and mills helped sustain the work, and the associated borough of Saint Giles seeded today’s Gilesgate.

Kepier’s story threads through northern politics and piety: kings passed this way on journeys to the Borders, and the hospital weathered Scottish raids in the early 14th century. On the eve of the Dissolution, the 1535 Valor Ecclesiasticus recorded it as the richest hospital in the diocese, devoting a quarter of its income to almsgiving. Suppression followed in 1539, and the estates passed into lay hands; yet the fabric of the site continued to evolve with later gardens, a mansion, and a mill.

For visitors today, the most striking survivor is the 14th-century gatehouse-its pointed arch framing a lane that still leads between field and river. The site is protected as a Scheduled Monument, with buildings listed at Grade I and Grade II*. Footpaths echo medieval routes between Kepier and its former lands at High Grange and Low Grange, making this a rewarding stop on a riverside walk from the city. Pause beneath the gatehouse and you’re standing at a doorway used for centuries by the poor, the pious, and the passing traveller.

According to the legend, it all started with a missing cow. Back in 995, a group of monks fleeing Viking raiders were hauling around the remains of Saint Cuthbert when their saintly cargo decided to stop moving. No matter how hard they tried, the bier wouldn’t budge-until a milkmaid chasing her lost dun cow wandered past. ("Dun" is a dull shade of brownish grey. ) The monks took the...  view more
