Saint Cuthbert's Church, Durham

Saint Cuthbert's Church, Durham

Saint Cuthbert’s is a Roman Catholic parish church with deep northern roots and a quietly elegant Gothic Revival design. Opened on 31 May 1827 and dedicated to the 7th-century bishop Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, it was designed by the local architect Ignatius Bonomi. The church is Grade II listed and sits within the Elvet Green Conservation Area-recognition of both its architecture and its place in the city’s story.

The present building replaced earlier Catholic chapels that served Durham’s recusant community through the centuries when public Catholic worship was restricted. A tower was added in 1869, and the church was finally consecrated on 20 July 1910. Today, it remains an active parish and also hosts Durham University’s Catholic Chaplaincy, reflecting a lively student presence. Even recent chapters matter here: from 2012 to 2016, the parish was entrusted to the Dominican Order, whose influence continues in the church’s liturgical life.

As a visitor, you’ll find a welcoming, prayerful space just a short stroll from the bustle of the city centre. Step inside to enjoy the calm proportions and the characterful English Gothic styling; linger for a moment of quiet, or simply take in the sense of continuity that ties modern worship to a much older Catholic story in the North of England. If you’re planning to attend services or explore further, check the parish website for the latest details on opening times and liturgy.

Back in 995, a group of monks fleeing Viking raiders were hauling around the remains of Saint Cuthbert when their saintly cargo decided to stop moving. No matter how hard they tried, the bier wouldn’t budge-until a milkmaid chasing her lost dun cow wandered past. ("Dun" is a dull shade of brownish grey. ) The monks took the...  view more
