Koornbrug (Korenbeurs Bridge), Leiden

The Korenbeurs Bridge (Koornbrug) in Leiden is a striking fixed stone arch bridge that spans the Nieuwe Rijn in the heart of the city. Connecting Burgsteeg with Koornbrugsteeg, this historic bridge has been a vital link and trading hub for centuries. Its name and legacy stem from the corn trade that flourished here for generations.

The origins of the Korenbeurs Bridge date back to the 15th century, though the current structure was built in 1642, replacing an earlier version. This version featured three elegant arches and a façade made from natural stone. The first stone was laid on December 15, 1642, and much of the bridge's base has remained unchanged since then. The design was later enhanced under the direction of Aren't van 's-Gravesande, a notable Leiden architect of the 17th century.

In 1824, the bridge underwent a significant transformation with the addition of two neoclassical canopies. Designed by Salomon van der Paauw, Leiden’s city architect, these roofs protected the traded corn from the elements. They also housed storage space under the roof, with ventilation provided by ceiling holes. The design prominently features the coat of arms of Leiden, adorned with ears of corn, symbolizing the bridge's historical function.

Registered as a National Monument in 1968, the Korenbeurs Bridge has seen several restorations over the years. In 1978, the canopies were extensively restored, with all columns replaced, partial roof renewal, and updated slate roofing. More recently, in 2007, the bridge was again restored due to damage caused by wood rot and fungi.

Today, the Korenbeurs Bridge stands as both a historical landmark and an architectural treasure in Leiden. Its enduring presence reflects centuries of trade, urban development, and architectural ingenuity, making it a must-see for visitors exploring the city’s rich history.
