Kornmarktplatz (Corn Market Square), Bregenz

Kornmarktplatz, known in English as Corn Market Square, has long served as a central gathering place. As its name suggests, it developed as a trading area where grain and other agricultural goods were sold. In earlier centuries, farmers from the surrounding region brought their produce here, turning the square into an economic meeting point between rural communities and the town. The open layout still reflects its market origins, with space for events, seasonal stalls, and public life.

Over time, the square evolved from a commercial hub into a cultural centre. On one side stands the Vorarlberg Museum, whose redesigned façade combines contemporary elements with references to traditional forms. Nearby is the Kunsthaus Bregenz, completed in 1997 and designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. Its glass and concrete structure contrasts clearly with older buildings in the area, showing how modern architecture has become part of the square’s identity.

A fountain marks the open space and provides a visual focus. Cafés and small shops line the edges, creating a steady rhythm of daily activity. Throughout the year, the square hosts markets, public celebrations, and cultural events that connect past and present. It remains a place where trade, culture, and everyday life meet in a shared urban setting.
