La Sebastiana Museum, Valparaiso (must see)
La Sebastiana is a distinctive house that once belonged to the renowned Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. It is part of a trio of residences owned by Neruda, including La Chascona in Santiago and the Casa de Isla Negra, all of which have been transformed into museums under the management of the Neruda Foundation. Situated strategically on the hillside, La Sebastiana is celebrated for its exquisite architecture and breathtaking views overlooking the bay of the port city.
Originally initiated by Spanish builder Sebastián Collado, the house was intended as Collado's retirement haven, but it remained unfinished due to his demise. In 1959 the house found its destiny when Neruda acquired it. The poet was captivated by the property, appreciating its seclusion and accessibility.
With its original four floors expanded by Neruda's addition of a loft, La Sebastiana offers visitors a journey through the poet's unique taste and unapologetic pursuit of personal adornment. The house boasts a wealth of interesting corners, filled with diverse objects and artworks, reflecting Neruda's eclectic preferences. The house is adorned with intriguing artifacts, including a portrait of Neruda's admired Lord Cochrane, collections of plates featuring hot air balloons, maps, maritime-themed items, stained glass windows, and various colorful paintings on the walls.
As visitors ascend the narrow stairs, they are treated to an increasingly prominent view of the sea, providing a splendid panorama of the bay and the coastline.
Following Neruda's passing in 1973, the house fell into neglect during General Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship until its restoration in 1991. La Sebastiana opened its doors to the public as a house museum on January 1, 1992, and was officially declared a National Monument on January 5, 2012.
