Larnaca District Archaeological Museum, Larnaca

Larnaca District Archaeological Museum, Larnaca

The Larnaca District Archaeological Museum offers an overview of the historical development of ancient Kition and the surrounding region. Opened in 1969, the museum is located near the Kition-Bamboula and Kition-Kathari archaeological sites. A replica of the stele of King Sargon II stands at the entrance, referencing the historical connections between Cyprus and neighboring civilizations.

Inside, the exhibits trace the area’s history from the Neolithic through to the Roman period. Many artefacts come from nearby sites such as Choirokoitia and Kalavasos-Tenta. A notable display features a Neolithic burial arranged as it was found-positioned on its side beneath a millstone-offering insight into early burial practices. Other objects from this period include bone tools, flint knives, and jewelry made from picrolite and shell.

The museum also holds a wide range of pottery. These include red polished and black slip wares, white painted and Base-Ring types, as well as imported Mycenaean ceramics dating from the 13th to 11th centuries BCE. Decorative pieces made of faience, alabaster, and ivory highlight Cyprus’s role in long-distance trade with regions such as Egypt, Phoenicia, and Assyria.

Visitors can also explore the museum through the Larnaka Virtual Museums platform, which provides expanded content and digital access. The museum is part of the Aphrodite Cultural Route, linking it with other archaeological sites across the island.
