Le Caudan Waterfront, Port Louis (must see)
Le Caudan Waterfront is a modern shopping, cultural, and leisure district built directly beside Port Louis Harbor. Opened in 1996, it combines contemporary buildings with surviving elements of the area’s former docks and warehouses. Rather than resembling a conventional enclosed mall, the complex consists of several distinct wings connected by pedestrian alleys, courtyards, covered galleries, bridges, and waterside paths. This layout allows visitors to move easily between the shops and outdoor areas overlooking the harbor.
Approaching from central Port Louis, follow the pedestrian access toward the waterfront and continue west until you reach Caudan Square, surrounded by some of the complex’s principal buildings. To the west, beside the water, stands the Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel, with the main shopping area nearby. Restaurants and cafés are concentrated primarily to the east and along the harbor-facing terraces.
From Caudan Square, continue south between the buildings until you reach Umbrella Square, easily identified by the colorful umbrellas suspended above the walkway. From here, turn west to reach the Blue Penny Museum. The museum occupies a separate, low building surrounded by trees. Its exhibitions explore the history, art, cartography, maritime connections, and postal heritage of Mauritius. Its best-known exhibits are the original 1847 One Penny Red and Two Pence Blue “Post Office” stamps, which are displayed only briefly each hour to limit their exposure to light.
Visitors can browse the shops, enjoy a meal beside the harbor, attend cultural events, or watch container vessels and cruise ships moving through the busy port. With its combination of shopping, entertainment, museums, and harbor views, Le Caudan Waterfront forms an appealing link between the commercial center of Port Louis and its historic waterfront.
