Government House, Port Louis

Government House, Port Louis

Government House is one of the oldest surviving public buildings in Port Louis. Constructed during the French colonial period under Governor Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, it formed part of his wider development of Port Louis as the administrative and maritime center of the Isle of France. Although the building has been altered and renovated over the centuries, it retains much of its colonial character.

Government House is significant both for its architecture and for its long association with the administration of Mauritius. Contrary to some descriptions, it is not the official residence of the president. Government House instead accommodates government functions and stands beside Parliament House in the administrative center of Port Louis.

Visitors generally admire the building from the surrounding public area rather than touring its interior. From outside, visitors can appreciate the building’s broad, symmetrical façade, shaded veranda, stonework, and red-tiled roof. One of its most noticeable features is the statue of Queen Victoria standing in front of the building. Installed during the British colonial period, the monument recalls the long period of British rule in Mauritius and provides an interesting contrast with the French colonial origins of Government House.
