Leidse Hout Park (Leiden Woods Park), Leiden
Leiden Woods Park, or Leidse Hout, is a tranquil urban park in Leiden, located approximately 1.5 kilometers northwest of the city center, near the border with Oegstgeest, and adjacent to the Leiden Deaconess House hospital. Opened on June 30, 1931, the park was a product of a government initiative to create jobs during the Great Depression. Its design was crafted by landscape architect Klaas van Nes, blending natural beauty with purposeful recreation.
The park is characterized by its Dutch flora, including oak, ash, beech, and alder trees, as well as an impressive diversity of over 140 species of mushrooms. It is also the only spot in Leiden where the rare ruddy bat can be found, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.
Leiden Woods features several facilities that enhance its charm. The park's centerpiece is a cozy tea house (Het Theehuis) offering a peaceful retreat with a terrace, a spacious lawn, and a deer park nearby. A bandstand, playgrounds, and a duck pond contribute to its appeal for families and visitors of all ages. The visitor center hosts exhibitions, nature walks, and educational activities focused on the park's biodiversity.
For sports enthusiasts, an adjacent sports park provides tennis courts, soccer fields, a track, and a softball field, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Whether you seek relaxation or recreation, Leidse Hout is an essential destination to experience the natural and cultural heritage of Leiden.
