Linz Hauptbahnhof (Linz Central Station), Linz

Linz Central Station (Linz Hauptbahnhof) is the main gateway to Linz, Austria’s third-largest city and the capital of Upper Austria. Opened in 1858, this bustling railway hub welcomes around 40,800 passengers daily, making it the busiest station in Austria outside of Vienna. Located at Bahnhofplatz, near the southern edge of the city centre, it serves as a vital transport interchange, connecting the Western Railway with the Pyhrn Railway, Summerauer Railway, and the Linzer Lokalbahn (LILO).

Over the decades, the Central Station has undergone several transformations. Originally constructed to coincide with the arrival of the Western Railway, it was rebuilt in the mid-20th century after wartime damage and once again modernized between 2002 and 2004 with a striking new design by architect Wilhelm Holzbauer. Today, the station combines efficient transport services with modern amenities, earning repeated recognition as Austria’s most beautiful railway station.

The station is structured on three levels: the ground floor features the main entrance, taxi rank, and direct access to the bus terminal; the intermediate level houses railway platforms, ÖBB services, shops, and restaurants; and the basement offers connections to all three lines of the Linz tramway network and an underground parking garage. Regional buses also link Linz with nearby towns such as Traun and Ansfelden.

Bright, spacious, and designed for short transfer routes, Linz Central Station is more than just a transit point-it is a modern travel hub that reflects the city’s dynamic spirit while offering visitors a seamless arrival to explore Linz and its surroundings.
