Long View Center, Raleigh

The Long View Center is a historic church building in the Moore Square Historic District of Raleigh. Originally constructed between 1879 and 1881, the structure was first known as Tabernacle Baptist Church. Over the years, the building has witnessed significant transformations in name, function, and architecture, reflecting the evolution of the community and its needs.

The Long View Center's story began in 1874 with the founding of the Swain Street Baptist Church, which moved to a larger building in 1881 and was renamed several times, eventually becoming Tabernacle Baptist Church. The church played a key role during the 1918 influenza epidemic, serving over 2,000 meals, and later hosted a WWII serviceman’s center. Membership peaked at nearly 4,000 but declined by the 1960s. In 1998, the property was sold and repurposed as the Long View Center. In 2013, Vintage Church bought it, transforming it into a mixed-use facility for ministry and events.

Architecturally, the Long View Center is a blend of Gothic Revival and Romanesque styles, with renovations throughout the early 20th century as the surrounding Moore Square district developed. The facility comprises four buildings: Freedoms Hall, 1880 Hall, North Carolina Hall, and Futures Hall, collectively spanning 50,000 square feet. Freedoms Hall, the original sanctuary, features 64 stained glass windows, a bell tower, and natural acoustics, making it the primary venue for events. The 1880 Hall serves as an art gallery and reception area, while Futures Hall and North Carolina Hall provide additional office and conference space.

Today, the Long View Center is not only the home of Vintage Church but also a hub for community activities, including concerts and events such as the Hopscotch Music Festival, Wide Open Bluegrass Festival, and art exhibits for First Night and First Friday, continuing its legacy as a cultural and spiritual cornerstone of Raleigh’s downtown.
