Magazin 4, Bregenz

Magazin 4 occupies a former industrial warehouse close to the lakeside, reflecting a period when this area developed as a working harbour zone. Built in the early 20th century as a storage warehouse for trade, the brick building with its large windows reflects its practical origins. Rather than being demolished, it was adapted for cultural use, preserving part of the town’s commercial history.

The conversion into an art space kept the industrial character visible. Inside, wide halls with high ceilings create flexible areas for exhibitions. Concrete floors and exposed beams remain part of the design, offering a neutral setting that can be transformed by installations, photography, painting, or multimedia works. The architecture allows curators and artists to respond directly to the scale and raw surfaces of the rooms.

Today, Magazin 4 serves as a municipal exhibition space for contemporary art by regional and international artists. The programme changes regularly and often explores current social and cultural topics. Workshops and talks link the venue with local creative communities, while the reused industrial setting highlights how historic structures can take on new cultural roles.
