Magoffin Homestead, El Paso (must see)
Magoffin Homestead is a historic adobe house built in 1875 by Joseph Magoffin, a trader, rancher, and local political figure. The house combines American and Mexican building traditions, which can be seen in its thick adobe walls, wooden beams, and central courtyard. The Magoffin family lived here for more than 100 years, helping preserve many original features and personal belongings.
Joseph Magoffin was active in trade and local politics, and he supported the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The family had ties on both sides of the U.S.–Mexico border, showing the area’s mixed culture. They lived in the house until the 1970s, which helped preserve much of its original character.
Today, the homestead is open as a historic site. Inside, visitors can see family furniture, photographs, clothing, and everyday objects from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Religious images and imported goods show the family’s trade links and cultural ties. Walking through the rooms and courtyard gives a clear picture of daily life in the border region more than a century ago.
