Maison Schongauer (Schongauer House), Colmar
Welcome to the Schongauer House (Maison Schongauer), a striking example of Alsatian heritage nestled in the historic heart of Colmar. This half-timbered gem is among the oldest surviving buildings in the city, with its origins tracing back to the late 15th century. Although it underwent renovations during the 17th and 18th centuries, its distinctive architecture-with a ground-floor arcade, three overhanging upper storeys, and a two-tier gable-remains remarkably well preserved.
Named after the illustrious Schongauer family, particularly Martin Schongauer, one of medieval Europe’s most celebrated painters and engravers, the house became known as “the Swan House.” Although Martin did not live there, he acquired the building in 1477 and established his workshop within. After his death, his brother Ludwig lived there until about 1495, and the property passed through the hands of guild members and artisans, including potters, bakers, and milliners.
In recognition of its cultural and architectural importance, the facades and roof of Schongauer House were classified as a Historical Monument on June 18, 1929. Visitors today can admire original medieval features, including an ornate entrance arch decorated with foliage and topped by a finial, located on the Rue Schongauer side.
This charming house is a perfect starting point for exploring Colmar’s fairy-tale ambience. Situated on Colmar’s main medieval market street, Schongauer House sits amidst a wealth of timber-framed houses, cobbled alleys, and nearby landmarks such as Pfister House, the Petit Venice district, and the Unterlinden Museum, which features Schongauer’s works. Whether you're an art lover, history enthusiast, or simply strolling through the Old Town, this picturesque former studio unfolds a fascinating chapter of Alsace’s artistic legacy.
