Mark Loria Gallery, Victoria

Mark Loria Gallery, Victoria

Mark Loria Gallery, located in downtown Victoria, is a renowned indigenous art gallery that has gained international recognition for its specialization in contemporary art from the Northwest Coast of Canada. The gallery, situated on the traditional territories of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples, takes great pride in representing leading indigenous artists from Vancouver Island, and across Canada for over four decades.

Formerly known as Alcheringa Gallery, Mark Loria Gallery has placed art in private and public collections worldwide, solidifying its position as one of the leading establishments in its field. The gallery actively contributes to the preservation and protection of indigenous culture, recognizing the profound significance of indigenous art as a medium for storytelling and cultural expression.

With a commitment to showcasing the rich diversity of indigenous art, the gallery hosts four to six new exhibitions every year. These exhibitions are complemented by ongoing presentations of new works by the talented artists represented by the gallery. Mark Loria Gallery boasts one of the largest fine print collections available, along with an extensive representation of paintings, carvings/sculptures, wearable art, ceramics, and textiles.

The original name of the gallery, Alcheringa, holds a deep spiritual meaning. Derived from an Aboriginal Australian word, it refers to the Dreamtime, a mythical period of creation when the world and all living beings were sung into existence. This resonates with the beliefs of the Northwest Coast, where singing and dancing are seen as essential for maintaining the connection between the spirit world and the physical landscape. It is believed that these invisible songlines hold Mother Earth together.
