Masaryk University, Brno
Masaryk University (MU) in Brno is a prominent academic institution and the second-largest university in the country. Established on January 28, 1919, it was founded as the second Czech university, following Charles University in Prague and Palacký University in Olomouc. The university is named after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of independent Czechoslovakia, who was also a key figure in advocating for the establishment of a second Czech university.
Over the years, Masaryk University has grown into a significant academic and research hub, currently comprising ten faculties and enrolling over 35,000 students. The university offers a broad range of programs with more than 200 bachelor's, 290 master's, and 130 doctoral full-time study programs, some of which are available in English or German. The university's pedagogical staff includes over 2,200 members, contributing to its strong academic and research environment.
Originally consisting of four faculties-Law, Medicine, Science, and Arts-Masaryk University expanded significantly in the post-Velvet Revolution era of the 1990s. New faculties were established, including the Faculty of Economics and Administration (1991), Faculty of Informatics (1994), Faculty of Social Studies (1998), and Faculty of Sports Studies (2002). These developments reflect the university's ongoing commitment to adapting and expanding its educational offerings.
A major milestone in the university's infrastructure development was the construction of a new campus in Brno-Bohunice, which began in 2002. The campus, which houses the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Sports Studies, part of the Faculty of Sciences, and several research facilities such as the Central European Institute of Technology and the Research Centre for Toxic Compounds in the Environment (Cetocoen), marks a significant investment in the university's future.
Throughout its history, the university has maintained a commitment to excellence in education and research, with a strong focus on international cooperation and vibrant student life, making it a respected and influential institution both within the Czech Republic and internationally.
